In the DRC, CARAH works closely with HEPH CONDORCET and the NGO CADEP (Committee of Farmers for Participatory Development).

WBI funding has been secured for a capacity building project for smallholder potato farmers in the Bweru Highlands. The locality of Bweru is located in the territory of the Masisi, in North Kivu. It is a region which is and has been regularly the victim of war and whose population is in a very precarious situation. Many migrants displaced by the conflict swell the ranks of this population.

The project decided to focus on building potato production capacity because it is a root crop with a short growing season, appreciated for its culinary virtues and having significant commercial value on the local market. Farmers will receive material and organizational support in order to become self-sufficient and generate economic surpluses. The project has also planned the cascading distribution of sheep, which will be used to enhance poor pastures and transfer organic fertilizer to potato cultivation land. The cascading distribution system greatly promotes community cohesion around the project.

The CARAH intervenes mainly by bringing its know-how around the production of the potato, thanks to trainings with the technicians and beneficiaries of the project.
